Today, most Advent Calendars include paper doors that open to reveal an image, or piece of chocolate. The tradition dates to the mid-19th century, when German Protestants made chalk marks on doors or lit candles to count the days leading up to Christmas.
As a child I always had one with the pretty pictures and waited until the December 25th where I could upgrade to the big square. As I grew older I grew into the daily chocolate surprises. Now there are so many more options to make the countdown to Christmas all the more exciting. Who doesn’t love a daily special surprise and not just for the children.
