Bright Ideas For Your Home
At our recent home show, the Toronto Fall Home Show that took place Sept. 23 – 25, we were wowed by all the amazing things to see! We especially loved the Casalife Bright Ideas lighting display! People were invited to take photos and share them with the #lightluv hashtag if they felt inspired.
Here are some great lighting tips that we think are valuable to review if you’re thinking of hanging a light anywhere in your home.
- To avoid bumping heads, a chandelier hung above a table should have a diameter 1 foot narrower than the table’s width.
- Chandeliers should be centered over the dining table. The light fixture should be hung 30-34 inches above the dining table. For ceilings higher than 8 feet, add 3 inches to the hanging height per foot.
- A good way to determine the correct size fixture is to add the length & width of the room measured in feet, then convert this number to inches. If your room measures 18′ x 22′, look for a chandelier with a diameter of 40 inches.

- It’s always worthwhile to install a dimmer. Not only does it allow you to control the mood and amount of light shed on any given surface or space, it’s also a great way to limit energy consumption and lower your energy bills
- Space a pendant every 2 feet or so above a kitchen island and pick the right size of pendant to suit your island length. Small islands (4 to 5 feet long) can handle 1 large or 2 medium pendants. Large islands can handle 2 large or 3 medium pendants.

- The rule of thumb is the same for any task lighting, whether it’s a table lamp on your nightstand or a floor lamp by your favorite reading chair “You want the bottom of the shade at about the height of your chin when you’re using the light,”
- Choose a light that can be angled. Floor lamps and table lamps are available with flexible swivel heads that can be angled and these are ideal. In general, the light should come from
over your shoulder or from the wall above the back of your head. - The older you get the more light you need—a person over 50 needs twice the amount of light as a 25 year old. At the same time, older eyes are much more sensitive to glare, so it becomes more important than ever to get a quality desk lamp with a controlled beam of light.
